Clemson: Real deal

The Tigers are ranked #1 in the nation in the latest Sagarin computer ratings — all the more reason sports fans should be glad college basketball does not employ a BCS-type system to crown its national champion. That said, this year's Tigers have the look of a possible NCAA Tournament team — thanks to Oliver Purnell's talented coaching more than their average talent and athleticism.

It would be easy to dismiss Clemson's 10-0 tally as a mere repeat of last year's start, where the Tigers won their first 11 games, but then lost 13 of their next 19 contests. But last year's fall was in large part the result of James Mays' sudden academic ineligibility at first semester's end. What's more, the Tigers last season lost three games in overtime and had six others decided by six points or less.

With Mays back in action, senior Vernon Hamilton dishing assists, and sophomore K.C. Rivers, in the midst of a breakout season, the Tigers should have more success in close games this year. They'll win two, but lose one, of the following three early January road contests: at Florida State, at North Carolina State and at Maryland.
