After stumbling, Clemson Basketball falls to NCSU
The OP Stat of the game: Noel Johnson 12 pts, 4-6 shooting
I don't know even where to start.
Last night was ugly from the start. NC State played with an obvious fire and enthusiasm that the Tigers did not have. I am not sure if they were complacent because they supposedly have locked up a place in the NCAA tournament or not. They will probably make the tournament, but solely because the at-large field is weak this year.
Even this tactic didn't work last night.
Outside of a few top teams, no team has shown any real consistency and staying power, Clemson obviously included.
Last night, one of the single bright spots was the play of Noel Johnson. Neither the lights, the partisan crowd, nor the lack of referee control bother him. Here is a link to the complete boxscore. Here is a gallery link from the Raleigh News and Observer, obviously a bit NC State-centric.
The rest of the team, TBooker included, looked out-of-sync and TBooker looked aghast at the lack of fouls being called- for the second game in a row. I thought he would have learned that things change in the endgame, the end of the season.
But, for all of the lack of fouls called and the fouls called that were not fouls, the foul call total was even 15-15. And here's more proof that it was all ball last night when Booker was whistled for his fourth.
The unevenness, though, was in the lack of rebounding effort. NCSU played bigger and stronger than Clemson last night. Tracy Smith, upset from being overshadowed by Booker and being called a poor man's Booker played tough and didn't let any criticism bother him.
The only solace I, and all, or at least most, Tiger fans can take from this is hopeful possibility of a Third Consecutive NCAA tournament bid, a first for Clemson Basketball. So in the grand scheme of Clemson Basketball, the Tigers are on the right track. As for last night, not so much.
Per next week, we'll have to wait and see.

Tanner Smith cringes in defeat (Greenville News)
I don't know even where to start.

Clemson stumbles into the ACC Tournament
It wasn't supposed to happen like this.
Trevor Booker and the heralded freshman class were supposed to contend for an ACC crown right away. Booker's senior leadership and the freshmen athleticism were going to usher in a new era for Clemson basketball.
As it stands, Clemson missed out on an opportunity for a 3rd seed and slipped to a 6th seed by virtue of losing at Wake and now have to play NCSU on Thursday night. They are the only team playing on Thursday with 20+ wins.The game is at 9pm. Should they defeat NCSU, they play FSU on Friday night at 9pm. Both games could go either way.
If the Tigers cannot regroup from the inconsistencies they demonstrated on Sunday, they will have an early exit. If they can take advantage of the neutral court site, where they have already had some success this season against UNC-Greensboro.
And as I said in November, hopefully, the UNCG game will help the Tigers prepare for the ACC tournament.
OP said this of the Tigers' focus going into the ACC tournament,

I don't feel the need to delve into his performance or lack thereof against Wake on Sunday. The refs clearly were letting them play down low. Booker needed to take advantage of this a little more.

The awards have been announced and everyone's favorite Terp is the ACC player of the year. And the Gary Williams is the Coach of the year. I can live with that, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

Senior Success for Potter and Booker as Clemson defeats GT 91-80
The OP Stat of the Game: Trevor Booker and David Potter Four successful years in Clemson
Every year since Potter and Booker arrived on the Clemson campus, the team has improved. While some believe the squad and the program has plateaued, I would argue that this team, even this late in the season, is still improving and performing in a top 25 manner. Per the program itself, being mentioned and discussed in national terms is something that has rarely occurred for Clemson, despite having 99 years of basketball.
For fans to expect Clemson to turn into UNC overnight, or even over a couple of years is ridiculous. Clemson is ever-improving, despite any missteps, a la Illinois/Maryland, this team or program has. In the past, those games were immediately chalked up as losses. Now, because of increased expectations, every game the Tigers play, they expect to win. The profile of Clemson Basketball is higher now than maybe ever- at least in terms of national media.
All of this aside, last night's win was huge for Clemson. They have now won 5-6 of their last ACC games, less the Maryland game. The Tigers currently stand in third place inthe ACC and are playing well going into the NCAA tournament. They have made a big statement by winning in Tallahassee and (hopefully) stamped their tickets or whatever to the NCAA with the emphatic win over GT. They have separated themselves somewhat from the logjam in the center of the ACC. Here's a link to the stats, boxscore, etc. from the big home win.
While the Tigers might not yet be assured of a first round bye in the ACC tournament, they are poised to make that happen. Watch this game review from Raycom:
Trevor Booker performed like it was his last game in Littlejohn with 21pts and 9reb, while Potter played the game like his last as well shooting 3-6 from 3pg to finish with 11pts.

After stumbling, Clemson finds footing vs. FSU win 53-50
The OP Stat of the Game: FSU, no double-digit scorers
It looked like the Tigers were going to slide from the second half of the MD loss. It looked like the Tigers were going to best, or worse (?) their 12 point Duke performance. It looked like the team was in the midst of another late-season collapse.
It looked like all these things and worse, but Andre "the Little Giant" Young kept the Tigers close in the first half with a half court shot to go to the half and a late game 3PT shot to give the Tigers the lead. Andre was playing close to home (Albany, GA) and played like he was in his hometown. He stepped up when necessary.
And Trevor Booker came up huge in the end with the block. I think everyone on the Clemson team knew where the ball was going, but it was Booker who got the block. The block went with his 19 pts and 11 rebounds. No one on FSU scored, nor rebounded in double figures.
Looking at the statistics it would seem that the Tigers lost this game.
They shot 33.3% FG (17-51) and 22.2% 3PT (4-18) and 78.9% FT (15-19). Numbers wise, the 15-19, including Booker's 4-4 stretch in the final minutes, saved us, 53-50.
But, it was bigger than that. The Tigers put in an all out solid 2nd half performance. The biggest win in this game, beyond the W itself, it the psychological mountain the team climbed and the storm they weathered to do so.
OP said, “I'm proud of our guys because of their toughness and their defensive effort. Our defense kept us in the game.”
Yes, that is true. Booker's block to end the game sealed the deal- which is something we haven't been able to do since, um, I'm at a loss here, maybe ever.
If the Tigers can bottle the psychology of this win, they should be able to finish strong against GT and Wake.
Yes, the Tigers control their own destiny, as Booker said, but the FSU/Wake game on 3/2 is big as well. We own the FSU tiebreaker, but VT plays NCSU, and finishes against GT.
Some of that new math might be needed to figure out the myriad possibilities for the Tigers to get the first round ACC bye with at least a fourth place finish. If you can figure it out, do so.

Clemson collapses in College Park, loses 88-79

I've thought about it.
I can't say that I am surprised.
Disappointed, yes.
Surprised, no.
Last night's game was a microcosm of Clemson Basketball: start strong, show some resilience, then forget how to play basketball, collapse.
Of the eight losses this season, here are the point differentials for the 1st half:

vs. Illinois: +20 (home)
vs. Duke: -18 (the 12 pt half) (away)
vs. GT: -6 (away)
vs. Duke: tied (home)

Of the wins starting with Butler:
vs. Butler: -7 (neutral)

1. This team can win and can maintain control and momentum throughout a game.
1a. Provided the Tigers are playing at home.
1b. The NCSU win is an anomaly.
2. This team cannot maintain control and momentum throughout a game.
2a. Provided the Tigers are playing an away game
2b. The Illinois game is an anomaly.
2c. Duke is Duke.
About last night's game, what do I need to say?

“Defensively we didn't play well enough to win. Obviously offensively we had a good first half and I thought that certainly the pace was what we liked and that's probably why we scored so well. Defensively, we stopped getting into our pressure; as a result we started to give them some easy baskets."
Decorum aside, here is what I wished he would have said:
"Defensively, we didn't play. Obviously we had a good first half, but can we really rely on Mr. Dependability, David Potter? I thought that the pace was what we liked and that's why we scored well. Defensively, we sucked. Our team identity is predicated on one thing: defense. We couldn't even do that. And did you see Vasquez mopping the floor? What a piece of ****."
OP obviously has more decorum than most and that is why he is where he is.
About Grant? The MD return was a bust last night. Potter fared better in his return, but we shouldn't have to rely on the outside shot. That should be just one component of the inside-outside game. Grant's presence down low was missed in the second half. The Tigers couldn't create the space for Booker and with the 3pt shots not falling as frequently, they couldn't get Booker the ball, though Trevor did manage to connect with Devin for a big alley-oop dunk. That quieted the crowd for about two seconds before the Terps went down to the other end for a quick score.
So all in all, what did we learn last night?
Re: MD
1. Vasquez is in fact the most pompous player to wear any ACC uniform in a long time, trumping Reddick.
2. Vasquez is a good player.
3. Vasquez is not the only player on the MD team.
Re: Clemson
1. The Tigers still cannot seal the deal
2. They have the ability, but seem to lack the drive.
3. The Tigers are running out of time to improve.

Clemson Throttles UVA 72-49
The OP Stat of the Game: Milton Jennings, 4-4, 11pts.
I know I could have chosen Jerai Grant 8-9 with 18 pts, but the possibility that this was Milton's breakout game is too much to resist. Milton Jennings played like the pre-season hype. If he continues on even half this pace, he has made big progress. His confidence has been building the past few games on the defensive side and now, hopefully, his confidence has switched to the offensive side of the ball.
Not only did Milton Jennings score 11 points, but Grant had a serious game. The refs, lead by Karl Hess, allowed the Tigers to play, which, of course, always benefits our style of play.
Nonetheless, now the Tigers play another road-weary team in Maryland. The Terps are coming off an emotional, last second, two last shot, win vs. GT. Remember Grievous Vasquez and his Stitt comment? Here's what Booker had to say:

The defense was on point yesterday, despite the fact they actually had fewer steals and TOs created than usual. OP had the team well-prepared. More importantly, though, the team was hitting their shots. Grant and T. Booker down created space down low and when the ball was kicked out the bench was able to step up hit jump shots, threes, or drive and dish, as the team had 18 ast vs. UVA

Of the game, Grant said, "“It's just being on the floor, straight up playing the game,” . “I used be in foul trouble a lot, but staying out of foul trouble keeps me on the floor, and staying on the floor has made my confidence soar.”
It also helps that when refs let the Tigers play their game. Clemson had 6 fouls, UVA had 14. Defensively, the Tigers did not have to rely on the press throughout. They used it to set up tight man-to-man.
This three game stretch came at just the right time. And the Tigers handled it with aplomb, going 3-0. Even Tony Bennet's crooning could not stop the Tigers.

This is another crucial game in the three game home stand for the Tigers. Starting 2-2 would do a lot to continue the success of the FSU win. As it stands now, though, the FSU game looks more like a fluke.
At the same time, Clemson played they way OP and Clemson basketball fans knew they were capable of playing. David Potter's resurgence is one of big reasons for the FSU win. His mental outlook is sharp and focused, "I've got to play every game like it's my last because I'm not going to be able to come back next year and get this back. I want to go out with a bang. We're back in the hunt to go to the Big Dance; we've just got to stay focused and keep moving on to the next game."

Miami has been inconsistent, but they are coming off a big win against GT. They have not been especially impressive; however, the hurricanes are not going to blow into town and roll over for the Tigers. They are still struggling to find the replacement for Jack McClinton.
On the Clemson side, guard play and outside baskets will be necessary for the win. With these two components in working order, the necessary space will be cleared for Booker (Trevor and Devin) and Grant. While they ball will be cycled through Booker, everyone needs to show up. It would be a nice time to see Tanner Smith regain some of that drive and stick-to-it-ive-ness he showed early in the season. He looked to be one of the most improved players, but is not playing at the same level he was earlier in the season. With Tanner back, DP3 back, Stitt at 100%, Andre "The Little Giant" Young finding his rhythm, and the front court trio of Booker/Grant/Booker working together, this team could develop into the NCAA-bound team we all want them to be.
Before that happens though, we will need to see another complete game from the Tigers.
Students shouldn't let the snow stop them from attending the game. It didn't stop VT. Make Littlejohn Loonie (again).

Clemson Basketball Fouls in 70-59 loss to VT
The OP Stat of the Game: Total fouls: 54; 30 Clemson, 24 VT
At least the referees were consistently calling fouls, bad or otherwise.
"That was two teams whose offenses were offensive and defenses were aggressive," Tech coach Seth Greenberg said. Clever word-play, Mr. Greenberg. I am sure you would have been biting your tongue a bit more, maybe even have received a fine for criticizing the refs.
OP reacted much more placidly to the officiating than I believe Greenberg would have,
“We came in and did some good things. But mentally, [the way the game was called] was a curveball and we didn’t adjust to it good enough. We did not expect the game to be called quite that way, but that will happen from time to time. We just didn’t adjust to it. We are accountable."
Nice save OP. The inclusion of personal accountability hopefully absolves the critical aspect of the game.
However, come on. That game was poorly officiated.
The fact Malcolm Delaney took more free throws than the entire Clemson team is suspect, regardless of how he is playing.
The Tigers shot 30.6% (19-62) from the field, while VT also shot 30.6% (15-49). The Tigers out-rebounded VT 47-35 and had 15 assists to their 5 and 11 blocks. I will not even get into the number of fouls on the team- the refs obviously hated our starting 5.
Per the positives in the game, Jerai Grant had another double-double, with 11 points and 15 rebounds, to go along with 4 blocks. Milton Jennings mostly stayed away from the layups he hates so much, taking only one shot, but otherwise played decent in his 9 minutes with 8 reb, 2 ast, 2 blk.
And while it was nice to have Stitt back, he did not seem 100%. I don't know that the rest of the team did either. They played out of sorts; maybe it was the snow; maybe it was the officiating; maybe it was the free tickets for VT students. Who knows?
But now, it will be interesting to see how the Tigers respond to this disappointing loss. It is difficult to play in Blacksburg, but not as difficult as it was made yesterday.
Up next is a three game home-stand against FSU 2/10, Miami 2/13, and UVA 2/20. These games and our home response will define the season.

Clemson grinds it out at home, moves to 4-4 in the ACC
The OP Stat of the Game: Jerai Grant 18 pts., 12 reb, 5 blocks
Given the following, I would have been less than optimistic, and truthfully would have have expected a solid loss.
1. Stitt not playing
2. D. Booker broken nose
3. T. Booker Flu
4. Lost three in a row
in-game play
5. 31.9% shooting
6. Trevor Booker 2-16 shooting, no FGs until late in the game
But, the Tigers surprised me, Maryland, and maybe themselves.
They started strong, were able to resist the comeback, and continued to play strong defense.
Defense and rebounding are what won the game last night. The Tigers pressed, played zone, pack it in the paint, and made MD work for every basket. And while they out-shot the Tigers based on %, the Terps took 17 fewer shots. This is because of the eye for the basketball the Tigers had tonight. They rebounded well, winning on the boards 46-41.
Andre Young, hopefully, has played through his nerves. If he plays like he did tonight when Stitt comes back and Trevor Booker returns to form, he might be the third person we need to spread the team offense.
I really thought, after the steal, then big dunk by Milton Jennings, that tonight was going to be it. I was wrong. Maybe he is just ballin' in practice. Who knows? But we need him to develop some muscle and court vision. I don't know if he is playing out of his position or what. Noel Johnson, once his shot falls, will be solid. They have both been working on their defense, as has the entire team.
Of the defense last night, OP said, " I thought our team did a good job of adjusting to who we are. If we continue to rebound and defend like that, we’ll be awfully good. We have to be a better defensive team than we had been coming into tonight. We came up with some big plays in the second half to preserve the win. You have to guard to have a chance to win the game, and we were an excellent defensive team tonight."
Gary Williams agreed,"Clemson’s defense was good tonight. We just got out-rebounded. Neither team shot the ball well and offensive rebounding was a factor. They turned the ball over less than we did. Clemson just played hard and rallied without Stitt."
Of course, Gary Williams appreciates what a solid PG brings to the floor, unlike say, Vasquez, who questioned Stitt's ability before the game. And not to turn this into an anti-vasquez post, but that guy sucks. He is everything that is wrong with Maryland basketball. I dislike him on a level beyond that of a Duke or UNC player. That level of hatred connects to ability and circumstance. If Clemson had many of the past or current Duke/UNC players, I would have probably liked, no loved them. For Vasquez, I would rather Shyatt still be the coach than to have him on the team- enough.
Next up is a mini-break before an away game against VT in Blackburg on Saturday, 2/6.

Clemson drops third game in row to BC- What next?

Really, BC 75- Clemson 69? Three-losses-in-a-row?
Supposedly, Clemson is a ranked team.
Supposedly, Milton Jennings is a McDonald's All-American.
Well, here is the deal. I am not a McDonald's All-American, etc.
However, I can hit a layup, even in traffic, at least sometimes.
This game was painful to watch. The Tigers are clearly a better team.
However, they played like a team who really had no idea what was going on. They, according to OP, worked on determination in practice.
If I didn't know that, I would have guessed they worked on give-up-itude. Seriously.
Every time the Tigers made a shot, they did the opposite of what they are supposed to do. Their full court defense is predicated on making shots. When they made shots, they did not set up their defense.
Per the offense. Again, no one is stepping up. Jerai Grant decides to show up when no one else is helping, but had he done this in other games, this would not be a situation.
Andre Young did not look like a point guard. He routinely picked up his dribble before crossing half-court. And in case you didn't know, Andre Young is fast. He needs to exploit his speed to open shots and passes. Tonight, he didn't do this.
The Tigers did not make the best of their opportunities. Maybe it was because they were being toyed with by the electrical company/gods in Boston; maybe they were feeling the lack of Demontez Stitt's leadership; maybe they are just tired.
Regardless of the reason, the Tigers did not perform up to their abilities- Stitt-less, or not.
Now, they get a five day break. After tonight's game they need it, eventhough it looked like they were just playing for it.
Congratulations Tigers; next up, you get the not-so-under-the-radar hottest team in the ACC, Maryland.

All of the big ESPN-ish people will be there starting early- Littlejohn doors open at 8:30am: Rece Davis, Digger Phelps, Hubert Davis, Jay Bilas in the morning.
Then gametime brings us Dickie Vitale, Erin Andrews, Dan Shulman.
With that much talent, plus buses, satellites, cables, wires, etc, it'll be just like another day at the home offices in Connecticut.
In case you don't follow ACC basketball, this season is wide open. I imagine a situation much like a lottery ball selection show with each team's name on a ball. The balls could come out an in any order.

Tomorrow night will be difficult. Duke, unlike UNC it seems, doesn't lose consecutive games. NCSU played strong in their win against Duke. They played like they did in the second half against us.
Duke did not show up with any energy or intensity. Coach K seemed to blame the scheduling and the fact NCSU had a long break while Duke was in a war.- And that they would be in another war Saturday night.

After the NCSU win vs. Duke, I didn't see any backlash for a storming of the court,as was the case when Clemson beat UNC. I guess its ok for a school that perceives themselves as a basketball school and has two national championships to storm the court when they beat a ranked triangle school, as opposed to a charter member of the ACC that has been on the losing side of more contests against the "big four schools" than any other team to storm the court.
It all seems so clear now.
What really needs to be said about the game?

Clemson loses close game to GT, 66-64.
The OP Stat of the Game: Clemson; 9 Ast, 40 reb, GT; 17 Ast. 48 reb.
Truthfully, I thought the difference in the number of rebounds would have been greater. The Tigers did a good job of hanging in the game and showed that they can play hard, strong, and fast.
The fouls on Grant hurt the Tigers. With Jerai out, they didn't seem as comfortable going inside, which is what they needed to do. Both Lawal had 4 fouls and Favors had 3. We should have been able to exploit this with by feeding the ball down low to T. Booker, Grant, or any one else really.
Jennings got some of his most meaningful minutes of the season with Grant on the bench, but again could not make the most of it. He still seems to be struggling with the speed and physicality of the college game. He grabbed 7 rebounds, but was sort of pushed out of the way on several plays.
I don't know if Stitt re-injured his ankle or not, but man, is he tough. He is definitely becoming one of the ACC's premier guards. By playing like he did tonight, he demonstrated leadership that he wouldn't have been able to convey verbally.
Solid, Demontez.
Andre Young performed admirably as well. With both Young and Stitt on the court, the Tigers can play fast.
While I didn't like seeing GT just go over the top with their alley-oops, it was extremely positive to see in-game defensive adjustments to stop this and the GT speed.
And yes, the adjustment involved tightening the press, but still, this is something that Tiger fans have been requesting for some time. So, good job OP.
This is a disappointing loss, but shows that the team has resilience, strength, and that we can play with anybody.
I will have to think about this one some more.

Stitt shoeless (Greenville News)
Stitt is questionable.The Greenville News needs to learn some more verbs after this post NCSU game headline, "Clemson rolls past NC State" - rolls? Really. More like limps, sputters, nearly blows it, anything that expresses the near meltdown.
Who knows which GT team will show up. They are strong. They have wins against Duke, UNC, but losses to FSU, UVA. Still don't know what to think about UVA- surprising. Out of the ACC, GT has also lost to UGA and Dayton. They are strong and fast. Hopefully we will catch them off-guard after their big-ish win in Chapel Hill. GT played the Clemson role after the Tigers were done with it in Raleigh. They almost blew a 20 point lead, as the Tigers almost blew a 22 point lead.
Just as interesting as which GT team will show up will be how the Tigers respond to the loss, or potential loss of Stitt. Young played well, but the forward positions, less Booker, did not step up as needed in Raleigh. Grant needs to continue his strong play and Booker needs to keep his head in the game. If we can get some production from the forward position via Potter, Johnson, D. Booker, Jennings, or anyone else, we might be able to steal one from GT.
One thing OP will adjust will be the type of pressure. Young doesn't play the same type of defense as Stitt. Stitt is lanky and pressures the ball with his full body. Young plays low and plays the ball for a steal off the pass or a tip.
This could get ugly or it could solidify our team.

Vegas even expected the Tigers to win with the line moving between 6.5 and 7 before the game. However, I don't think anyone, even the team expected such a resounding victory.
From the outset of the game, the Tigers established themselves as the aggressors. They kept the pressure on throughout the game and found what had been missing, the heavy foot pressing down on the accelerator and a mental toughness that has been absent.
Maybe it started before the game in tents on the lawn outside Littlejohn.
Maybe it started on the street during theUNC crash.
Maybe it started with the loss to Illinois, as Andy Katz suggested.
Maybe it has been going on all along with the 0-for Chapel Hill, the 0-vs. UNV for T. Booker's career.
Maybe it is that argyle running down the UNC jerseys.
Maybe it is all of these things. Whatever it is, the win last night was huge. Not just in terms of the score, 83-64. Not just in terms of the color and volume of Roy's tie.

Maybe it started on the street during theUNC crash.
Maybe it started with the loss to Illinois, as Andy Katz suggested.
Maybe it has been going on all along with the 0-for Chapel Hill, the 0-vs. UNV for T. Booker's career.
Maybe it is that argyle running down the UNC jerseys.
Maybe it is all of these things. Whatever it is, the win last night was huge. Not just in terms of the score, 83-64. Not just in terms of the color and volume of Roy's tie.

Roy's reaction to the game:
"I just coached a poor game tonight. They had a tremendous sense of urgency and tremendous passion. We went down 7-0 and I almost called a timeout and I have never done that in my life. We turned the ball over 15 times, had two veterans that couldn't pass and catch. There is no reason but to say that the head coach did a poor job.
"We need to have a better sense of urgency and poise. It was the veterans tonight that had trouble. I want to congratulate Clemson and Oliver Purnell. We came in and wanted to do a good job on Booker and Stitt tonight and they both had 11 in the first half. It all just goes back to the head coach."
"Clemson showed what aggressive means. They had a great sense of urgency and poise and we need to play with that type of aggression and poise. I know that I keep saying the same thing, but I just don't have a lot to say."It is not the same indictment that Coach K made when Duke lost last year in Littlejohn, but isn't too far off either.

Clemson Basketball Throttles UNC
The OP Stat of the Game: 1 Car Crash
That is where it all started going down hill for the Tarheels.
The player(s) of the game: Stitt and T. Booker. Stitt 20 pts, 4 ast. Booker 21 pts, 9 reb, 4 ast, 2 stl. These lines, with the contributions of other team members could beat most anyone in the ACC.
Despite being out-rebounded, the Tigers handled the taller Tarheels with, of all things, their speed. Stitt and Booker both played with a purpose and drive they had not shown for some time.
T. Booker played like this was an NBA draft camp. He demonstrated and dominated the highly touted UNC frontcourt. Ed Davis, Deon Thompson, the Wears, etc.
Some of the UNC fans tried to play down the Clemson win and poked fun at the Clemson fans rushing the court in favor of the overall record. This of course is ridiculous. The very usage of Twitter by fans, including myself, negates the existence and reliance on history. We need the NOW.
And now, UNC lost and lost BIG. They were out-played, out-hustled, out-performed on all levels. While the Charleston game could be seen as a fluke, this win for the Tigers is not. They exploited all of UNC's weaknesses.
OP did a masterful job of playing to our team's strengths and against their weaknesses. It also helped that the Tigers were hitting their 3pg, at least in the first half.
Because the opponent was UNC, the Tigers were jacked. They were ready and took advantage of a weak, tired, and injured UNC team. Nonetheless, UNC played without enthusiasm. Roy pulled all five starters on more than one occasion. This combined with killer mentality that Clemson has lacked for- I don't know- the past 3-5 years, made this game different.
Should the Tigers be able to keep this mentality, seal the deal, finish hard/strong, they have a tremendous upside, potential, and hope for March.
Now we get to see what happens when they arrive in Raleigh. NCSU just beat a ranked FSU team, so they will be ready and wary. Let's hope the Tigers don't spend too much time celebrating before Saturday's 12pm game.

Clemson rebounds against BC; Time for UNC
The OP Stat of the Game: 40 team rebounds, 8 blocks
OK, the BC game was fun. The Tigers demonstrated that they can play with emotion and fire- at least for most of a game.
Trevor Booker showed that he (still) can take over a game. -19 pts.
Stitt showed what we have lacked for the past few years- a scoring, slashing point guard.- 15pts, 4ast.
Potter showed that Noel Johnson needs to be the starter- 0pts, 2ast
Noel Johnson showed that he deserved to be.- 7pts, 3stls, 1ast
Milton Jennings showed that he isn't always clueless during a game- 4pts, 2-2FT
Devin Booker showed that he is still a work in progress.-8reb, 0pts.
Jerai Grant showed he is capable, but still has some work to do.- 9pts, 4reb, 3pf
Andre Young showed that despite his shot being off, he can still offer the team something- 5reb, 2ast, 1stl
Tanner Smith showed a nice recovery and heart- 15pts, 4ast
It was a team effort. That is what this crop of Tigers needs to keep doing. When one player is not playing well in one category, someone else needs to step up. This can happen. It happened earlier in the season, and it happened against BC.
Now, it is time for it to happen against UNC.
UNC survived a halftime deficit to VT last night and overcame their slow start to win by 14.
This year, the Tigers don't have to travel to Chapel Hill, where everybody knows what happens when the Tigers arrive.
This year, they come to Littlejohn and it is time for a Tiger victory over the Tarheels.
Of course, it isn't going to be easy.
UNC is relentless, even on their off days, even when they look lazy, always. Roy will find a way. The Tigers might need to take a page from Bobby Cremins handbook.
If the Tigers are going to win, they have to be relentless. They have to want to win. And they have to want it more. They also have to want it for a full 40 Minutes- something that they haven't seemed to do during a few games this year.
Wednesday is quickly approaching. It will be a game between two ranked opponents. UNC seems to be limping a little, just as the Tigers are starting to get into a better rhythm. It will be difficult.

Yes, ACC play for the Tigers has already started.
Yes, the Tigers were blown out of Cameron.
Yes, their offense has been sputtering.
Yes, they are still in early season form.
Yes, inconsistency has been the name of the game.
Now, the Tigers have a home game against a not very strong, but solidly coached team in BC. And while Clemson has not been consistent, they have shown that they are capable both offensively and defensively.
Should the Tigers be able to put two halves together, they could be a dangerous team, but right now, they are not playing as such. Check out OP's assessment of the situation here.
BC is been inconsistent thus far as well. They own a 9 pt win over the gamecocks, Michigan, Miami, but also have losses to Harvard,Rhode Island and Maine- all regional rivals.
They play hard-nosed Skinner defense behind the strong frontcourt play of Joe Trapani and Corey Raji. Additionally, they play big and methodical with several players fitting into the forward-guard and forward-center positions. The loss of Tyrese "Tutankhamen" Rice removes some of the toughness and speed they had last year, but again, Al Skinner is a past National Coach of the Year. He obviously knows what he is doing.
It could be a rough start to the new semester for the Tigers if they cannot play their game. Of course, right now, what is their game. Maybe they do need to play someone else's game. Who knows?
Either way, Trevor Booker has to show up; He has been notably absent in many of the games this season. Block-C speculates a little about this here. Stitt has to continue his dribble-drive penetration, but if someone doesn't slide open for the outlet pass- interior or outside, it could be ugly.
The Tigers should- that is should- win. And while this is only the second ACC game this season, it is imperative that the Tigers re-establish a mental and physical toughness that has been lacking thus far this young season.
